Frequently Asked Questions About PrimaCat Products
Before the packaging update, the ingredient list on the wet food packaging stated “88% meat and animal derivatives in the fillet pieces”. It now states “Meat and animal derivatives 30%”. Has the amount of animal-based ingredients been reduced?
The recipes for our meal pouches have remained exactly the same. Only the packaging and the way the ingredients are presented have changed. Previously, in line with common industry practice, we stated how much meat and animal derivatives were contained within the pieces themselves. In the finished product, the contents consist of 50% pieces and 50% gravy or jelly.
We now state how much meat and animal derivatives the entire product contains rather than just the pieces. As a result, the percentage shown on the packaging is lower, even though the amount of meat and animal derivatives in the food has remained unchanged. We made this change because we found that the previous method of presentation could sometimes lead to misunderstandings.
All wet cat foods containing gravy or jelly have a high moisture content, meaning they contain a significant amount of water. However, water is not typically listed in the ingredients list. Cats are naturally poor drinkers, so it is important for their wellbeing to obtain sufficient fluids from their food.
That is why our meal pouches contain 50% pieces and 50% gravy or jelly. If the products contained more pieces, the texture and consistency of the meal would not be as intended.
Do PrimaCat products contain added sugar, and are they grain-free?
PrimaCat products do not contain added sugar.
The following PrimaCat products are made using grain-free recipes: meal pouches in gravy and jelly, selected dry foods, Soup complementary foods, and all treats.
However, the products are manufactured in facilities that also handle grains, so they may contain trace amounts of grain.
Does PrimaCat offer products suitable for cats with kidney disease or diabetes?
For the dietary management of medical conditions, we always recommend using food prescribed or recommended by a veterinarian. PrimaCat products are not specifically formulated for the treatment or management of diseases.
How is the quality of PrimaCat products monitored?
All PrimaCat products undergo product and quality specification processes. In addition, our quality control system includes monitoring product quality and any potential quality deviations through laboratory testing.
We follow the feline nutritional guidelines and cat food quality requirements established by FEDIAF (the European Pet Food Industry Federation). In Finland, the Finnish Food Authority supervises the quality of pet food as well as its manufacturers and importers.

If our meal pouches contain 50% pieces and 50% gravy or jelly, why does the ingredient list state, for example, “Meat and animal derivatives 30% (duck 4%)”?
The recipes used in our meal pouches contain 34.5% pieces, of which 88% are meat and animal derivatives. This means that the recipe contains the amount stated in the ingredient list, namely 30% meat and animal derivatives (34.5% × 0.88 = 30.36%).
During cooking, the pieces absorb some of the gravy, resulting in a 50/50 ratio of pieces to gravy or jelly in the finished product. However, this does not affect the amount of meat and animal derivatives contained in the recipe.
As a result, the finished product contains 30% meat and animal derivatives, 4% other ingredients, and approximately 66% gravy or jelly, some of which has been absorbed into the pieces during cooking.
“Duck 4%” means that the product contains 4% duck, and this amount is included within the total percentage of meat and animal derivatives.
What does ash content mean?
Ash content is the amount of mineral matter that remains after a product has been heated to a high temperature, causing the organic material to burn away and the water to evaporate. The remaining minerals, such as magnesium, phosphorus and iron, are collectively referred to as ash content.
Ash content is expressed as a percentage. The higher the ash content, the greater the amount of bone material that was present in the raw ingredients used in the product.
What does the term “meat and animal derivatives” mean on the packaging?
Cat food is made using meat and other animal parts, such as organs, that remain after food intended for human consumption has been produced. The term “meat and animal derivatives” on the packaging refers to these by-products from the human food industry.
These ingredients typically originate from more than one farm animal species and are therefore listed under the general category “meat and animal derivatives” in the ingredients list.
Meat and organs from the human food production chain are highly nutritious for cats. As obligate carnivores, cats require protein from animal sources. Animal protein also provides essential amino acids, such as arginine and taurine, that cats need for their wellbeing. In addition, using these by-products helps reduce waste within the food industry.
Our products are manufactured in facilities that handle a wide variety of ingredients. This should be taken into consideration, particularly when feeding cats with allergies. If your cat has food allergies, we always recommend consulting a veterinarian regarding the most suitable diet.
Where are PrimaCat products manufactured?
PrimaCat dry foods and meal pouches are manufactured in the Czech Republic. Our Fillets and Soup complementary foods are produced in Thailand at a facility that also manufactures food products for human consumption.

Where can I find the product’s batch number?
The product’s batch number can be found in the printed code on the packaging. This code is either located in the designated area on the pack (usually in the lower right corner on the back) or printed elsewhere on the packaging.
The printed code includes both the best before date and the batch number used to identify and trace a specific production batch. The batch number is the combination of letters and numbers shown alongside the date.
Where do the ingredients and raw materials used in PrimaCat products come from?
The ingredients used in PrimaCat dry foods and meal pouches manufactured in the Czech Republic originate mainly from Europe and from areas close to the production facilities.
